Plain text of Book Three · Thirty-sixth Piece
"My measure is full, and I go forth." —
When the soul strips off the body,
the body holds its mouth closed,
the chamber shows stiffness.
The Seven surrounded the body,
they sit there (and say):
"When you go out, O soul,
they will bring you in before the toll-keepers." —
"If I go out, the demons stand there,
if I turn back, my number is indeed full.
Where is the Living God whom I loved,
where is the One who loved me?
Where is the man of tried righteousness,
in whose name I gave alms?
Where is the Knowledge of Life,
in whose name I went to the Jordan?
Where is the Jordan of living water,
from which I drew victory?
From it I drew victory
and received the pure sign.
Where is the course that I ran,
where is the greeting that my hands offered?
Where are the shoes of my feet,
which I wore out with my friends?
Where are you going, Lord of Truth,
while the demons hold my body surrounded?
The demons hold my body surrounded,
and my eyes are changing colour in my head."
I lifted my eyes up on high
and beheld the man, my helper.
He said to me:
"Go out, O soul,
for your sake I have come here." —
"Carry me, carry me," cries the soul,
"carry me away from them and do not leave me behind."
He carried me out from the midst of the Seven,
he lifted me above the toll-keepers.
He lifted me out [above the toll-keepers],
brought me up on high and set me up in the house of perfection,
in the place that is all radiance,
in the dwelling that is all light.
To that place
your souls too are called and invited. —
The Living God is exalted and victorious,
and victorious is the man who went this way.
He rose up and lifted me up with him
and did not leave me in the vain dwelling.
