Plain text of Book Three · Thirty-first Piece
At the gate of the prison
the radiance of the first day passed by.
The radiance of the first day passed by,
and at the gate of the prisoners the light grew full.
When the souls beheld the radiance and light of the Knowledge of Life,
they felt joy in their chains.
Then the keeper of the prisoners,
who lived among them, said to them:
"Which is my best day among the days?
The day on which you felt joy in your chains."
Then the prisoners, among whom he lived,
said to the keeper of the prisoners:
"Our best day among all days is
the day when the radiance of the first day passed by.
The radiance of the first day passed by,
and at the gate of the prisoners the light grew full.
When we beheld the radiance and light of the Knowledge of Life,
we felt joy in our chains."
Then I said to the keeper of the prisoners,
who lived among them:
"You keeper of all the prisoners, you keeper of the prisoners!
Let your souls go and give them to me.
Let go and give me the souls
who are worthy and deserving of the place of light,
every one who is marked with the sign of the Living God
and has been washed in the four Jordans."
Then the keeper of the prisoners,
who lived among them, said to him:
"Good one, your souls are many,
endless and countless.
Search for them in your gentle mind
and speak with your majestic voice.
With your majestic voice speak,
and pick out your souls and lead them away.
Pick out and lead away your souls
who are worthy and deserving of the place of light,
every one who is marked with the sign of the Living God
and has been washed in the four Jordans."
I searched in my gentle mind
and spoke with my majestic voice.
With my majestic voice I spoke,
picked out my souls and led them away.
I picked out and led away my souls
who are worthy and deserving of the place of light,
every one who is marked with the sign of the Living God
and has been washed in the four Jordans.
Then the keeper of the prisoners,
who lived among them, said to him:
"Good one, you picked out your souls and led them away;
who will grant them relief from their chains?" —
Then I answered and said
to the keeper of all the prisoners:
"In the world where these souls dwelt,
relief is brought there.
Relief is brought there,
and bread is given to the poor.
Upon the table is laid
the relief from their chains." —
The Living God is exalted and victorious,
and victorious is the man who went this way.
I go to meet my likeness,
and my likeness comes to meet me.
It caresses and embraces me,
as though I were returning from captivity.
