Plain text of Book Three · Twenty-sixth Section
Whose soul is this,
so built, well built?
So built, well built is she,
so true and faithful.
So true and faithful is she,
so equipped, well equipped.
She feels no anxiety and fear,
she knows neither anxiety nor fear.
She does not fear the toll-keepers,
nor the perverse spirits.
A wreath of ether was set on her head
and she was taken out of the world.
This soul flies and journeys
until she came to the house of the toll-keepers.
When the chief toll-keeper saw the soul,
he questioned her:
"By whose power have you gone out, soul,
and whose name is pronounced over you?" —
"I have gone out by the power of Life,
and the name of God is pronounced over me."
"[To what] shall I compare you, soul,
to what in this world?
I compare you to the sun of the day,
I compare you to the moon of the night.
I compare you to the north wind,
when it stirs in the world.
I compare you to the waves of water,
when the north wind blows over them."
The soul shone more than the sun of the day,
she was brighter than the moon of the night.
She was stronger than the north wind,
when it stirs in the world.
She was more pleasant than the waves of water,
when the north wind blows over them.
The chief toll-keeper bowed his head,
and the soul rose above him:
"Go, soul, ascend,
go, fly and arrive." —
God is held high and is victorious,
and victorious is the man who went here.
How greatly I rejoice,
how greatly my heart rejoices,
how greatly I rejoice
for the day when my case is settled,
for the day when my case is settled
and my going is to the place of life!
