Plain text of Book Three · Twenty-fourth Section

I passed by the gate of the captives,

my splendour rose over their prison.

Over their prison my splendour rose,

and they became fragrant through my fragrance.

Through my fragrance they became fragrant,

and Sheol shone through my splendour.

The souls perceived it,

and they weep and howl and pour themselves out in tears.

I call to the overseer of the captives:

"Open the gate to the souls."

Then he says:

"How many shall I let out for you of a thousand,

how many shall I let out for you of ten thousand?"

He opened the gate for me

and set the seal on the document.

He opened the gate for me

and gave them the reward for their chains.

Bread he laid out for the poor,

feasts he distributed to the persecuted,

he assigned to their tables the reward for their chains.

The souls were set apart

from the place of darkness to the place of light.

And God is victorious.
