Plain text of Book Three · Seventeenth Section
I hear the voice of the soul of life,
weeping from the body of refuse.
She says:
"Naked was I brought into the world,
and empty was I taken out of it.
Empty was I taken out of it,
like a bird that nothing accompanies."
It is the voice of the soul,
that laments and weeps in her place.
She says:
"What shall I do with you, my body,
in that world?
If you, my body, were a garment of splendour and light,
I would put you on,
and you would ascend with me to the house of life.
If you were a girdle of splendour and light,
you would be bound about my loins,
and you would ascend with me to the house of life.
If you were a wreath of splendour and light,
you would be laid upon my head,
and you would ascend with me to the house of life.
If you were a staff of splendour and light,
I would hold you in my hand,
and you would ascend with me to the house of life.
If you were sandals of splendour and light,
you would be laid upon my feet,
and you would ascend with me to the house of life."
Thus spoke and spoke the soul,
and the body did not accompany her.
I hear the voice of the messenger of God,
who calls to the soul of life:
"Come, come, you who gave light,
who lit up the dark house.
Come, come, you who spread fragrance,
who made the stinking body fragrant.
Come, come, you of noble birth,
who were called a maidservant in the dwelling of the wicked."
The soul turns and looks
at the body and the palace from which she was taken.
She says to the body:
"Were you not a body
formed from a lump of clay!
From a lump of clay you are formed,
and the Seven who persecuted you remained standing as the defeated.
The Seven who persecuted you remained standing as the defeated
within this world." —
God is held high and is victorious,
and victorious is the man who went here.
The soul stands on the way
and goes to meet the truthful.
She says to them:
"Come, eat and drink, you good ones,
I will be with you."
