Plain text of Book Three · Sixteenth Section
The soul in the fruit of life
blooms and flowers.
She blooms and flowers.
The angels stepped forward and questioned her:
"When you were in the Tibil,
in the perishable house,
when you were among the Seven,
the sons of the vain dwelling,
what did the Seven do to you
when you were among them?"
Then she answers them:
"They called me a slave who has no master,
and daily they brought me to judgement.
They twisted the judgement against me,
they pursed their lips against me.
They called me a slave who has no master and no mistress;
everyone who reaches him strikes him,
everyone who meets him angers him,
and everyone who comes to him despises him.
They called me a river without a crossing,
that has risen and is blocked at the mouth.
It has risen and is blocked at the mouth,
and the plants beside it thirst and die of thirst.
They called me a captive without a homeland,
who has no father.
No father has he
and no nurturer.
Woe and sorrow were mine,
that I had to hope so long for my helper.
For my helper I had to hope,
the man who let me hear his voice,
that he might come and release me from the wicked,
release me from the sinners,
that he might release me from the bailiffs, whom spies let loose,
who are set over wrath in the Tibil,
that he might release me from the keepers of the watch-houses, release me from the judges
who give false judgement.
I said to myself: When shall I come out
of the desolate wilderness?
I said to myself: When shall I come out of it
and behold the place of light?"
As I stand at my place,
I beheld my helper.
I beheld the gentle angel,
the man who let me hear his voice.
He cried out and let me hear his voice
and stayed my heart upon its support.
When I beheld my guide, the angel,
the man who is a helper to me,
when I beheld my guide, the angel,
I shone (in my superiority) over the worlds.
He spoke and said
to the sons of the vain dwelling:
"I am a servant whose Master is One,
there is no noble who is like me.
I have as guide an angel,
I have a nurturer.
I have as Protector a Judge,
who provides for my cause against my persecutors.
I have a Lord of the plants,
who waters His plants."
The planets stand there,
they whisper and say:
"By whose power does he stand there,
that his mind is so firmly supported?
Who is his Lord, who his helper,
who is the Judge who provides for his cause against his persecutors?"
Then I answered the Seven,
who have condemned themselves:
"I am the servant of the Unseen One,
the One who strengthens His friends.
I am the servant of the Unseen One,
the One who is a helper.
A helper He is to the men ......,
and He makes His tribe firm." —
God is held high and is victorious,
and victorious is the man who went here.
When I was among you,
you cared nothing for me.
Now I will go my way,
what have I in common with you?
