In the name of God, the Great,

be glorified the exalted light. —

After the firmament was spread out,

after the earth was made firm,

after the sun came,

after the moon was revealed,

after the Seven came

and these Twelve passed here,

the body of Adam was formed,

but no soul had yet been put in it.

For the sake of Adam's body

the soul came from the house of God, the Great Life.

From the house of the Great Life the soul came,

and the three angels came with her.

With her the three angels came

and set her outside the body.

Outside the body they set her:

they wish to bring her into the body, but she does not enter.

she weeps, laments and pours herself out in tears:

"To you I speak, you angels, my brothers,

let me wait only one hour of the day.

that I may let my voice rise to the place of light.

'Send quickly a good one to me.

Let him destroy the structure

and give the body over to its master.

Let him lift me up to the place of life,

where my root stood before,

that the wicked may not make me blind,

the sinners not make me deaf.

That the wicked may not make me blind

and I not know whence I came.

and I not hear what they say of me.

Now the peoples, borders and tongues oppress me

and throw me into the sea of gall.

Now idolatry oppresses me,

and I must deliver myself to every city.

Now the wicked tie together flutes,

and accursed pipes speak through my mouth.

They teach me the voice of apostasy,

and I forget my Lord from my mind.

They throw me into a deep well

into which the wicked fall without coming up.

The dragons devour me,

and they hold me captive in music, in the dwellings of revelry.'"

Each one says to her:

"Guiltless soul of Life!"

Each one says to her:

"Messenger of all lights!"

Each one says to her,

to the guiltless soul of Life:

"O soul, rise, go,

enter the body

and let yourself be held captive in the palace.

The fierce lion will be taken captive through you,

the fierce, fierce lion.

The dragon will be taken captive through you,

the wicked one will be slain in his place.

Through you the leader of darkness will be bound."

Each one says to her:

"Guiltless soul of Life!"

Each one says to her,

to the messenger of all lights! —

"Good one, if you wish that I go,

enter the body

and be held captive in the palace,

give me a high weapon,

that I may ward off my pursuers from me."

Each one says to her:

"Messenger of all lights!"

Each one says to her:

"Guiltless soul of Life!

What high weapon do you desire, soul,

that we may grant it to you from the treasure of life?

Your weapon is the faith of the Nasoraeans,

the true words that came to you from the place of light."

They said further to her:

"For your sake, soul,

this firmament was spread out,

this firmament was spread out

and stars were formed in it.

this dry land came to be,

the solid mass formed and fell into the water.

The vines of joy are torn up,

and their song passes and is lost.

The gold is lost,

and the silver is sought and not found.

The nobles and lords

depart from the world in their heart's grief.

They acquire and leave it to their children,

they go away and seethe in the fire.

The children of the wretched and persecuted

leave the world in sorrow.

The Tibil passes away and comes to an end

in the depths of the stench of darkness."

In the name of my Lord, by His strength, I went and entered the body.

I went and entered the body

and let myself be held captive in the palace.

From the day I entered the body,

I was its companion through the ages.

and the wicked were angry with me from the depths.

and they wish that the soul of life go among them.

When I saw them,

I held her apart from the world.

When God looked upon me,

He gave me strength.

He had me clothed with splendour

and covered with precious light.

He set a wreath of victories upon me,

whose leaves shine.

He said:

"O soul, guard your speech,

that they may not bind you in the house of the toll-keepers." —

God is held high and is victorious,

and victorious is the man who went here.

My mind loved life,

and my soul acknowledged the place of light.
