A soul am I of the Great Life,

a soul am I of the mighty Life,

a soul am I of the Great Life.

Who brought me away from my place?

From my place, who brought me away,

who let me dwell in the house of the planets?

Who let me dwell in the house of the planets,

who cast me into deficiency?

Who threw me into the place that is full of shameful deeds,

where all are full of deception and falsehood?

Who shut me into their mysteries,

who bound me with their chains?

Who laid me in their great stocks,

who showed them to me?

Who threw me into their walls,

who shut their gate against me?

Who put me together with their toll-keepers

and led me past their watch-houses?

When I saw them, I was terrified,

and fear came over me.

I was terrified, fear came over me,

and I told myself that I would forget what the Mighty One had commanded me.

As the soul stands and reflects,

his helper drew near to him:

"I have come to you,

that you may dwell among the works of your hands.

While you dwell among them,

take care not to destroy your soul.

Take care not to commit their (the wicked's) sins,

lest you be counted with them to their end.

If you keep yourself apart from them,

they will be able to do nothing to you.

They will not hold you back with their bolts,

they will not go before you on the way.

I shall quickly deliver you from them

and from the vain keepers of the watch-houses,

and from the dark walls

that are a portion of the transient.

God will reckon your works;

in true love I shall lift you up.

I shall reveal to you Sam, the hidden,

and his good name in which you dwelt.

I shall show you the three pure things,

wondrous and of the world beyond.

Your heart, that pains you, will find rest,

and you will forget the persecution of the world."

The soul blesses

and thanks his great helper:

"If you show me these things,

why should I dwell with the transient?"

His measure was full, and his time came,

and the soul ascended to his place.

The soul ascended to his place,

and the gentle angels went out to meet him.

The angels went out to meet him,

they brought him splendour, light and radiance.

They clothed him with splendour

from that with which they clothe themselves in their place.

They covered him with a turban of light,

of the kind with which they are covered in their place.

[And they opened] the gate to him with their praise.

"Yes, thus we loved and honoured you,

because you freed yourself and ascended from the world!

You freed yourself, ascended from them,

and were set upright among us in glory." —

God is held high and is victorious,

and victorious is the man who went here.

In the name of God, the Great: may the fellowship and bliss of life, and a forgiver of sins, be granted to me, N.N., to my wife N.N. and my children N.N., and to the souls of our fathers, our teachers, our brothers and our sisters, who have departed from their bodies and who still dwell in their bodies.

O gentle soul,

O ordered, well-ordered soul,

O gentle soul,

may helpers come with you,

until the scale weighs

works and reward.
