Plain text of Book Two · Twenty-fourth Section
A soul am I of the Great Life,
a soul am I of the mighty Life,
a soul am I of the Great Life,
whom they brought [from the house of the Great One].
They brought me from the house of the Great One;
I have come to establish the tribe;
to establish the tribe I came
and to keep away the fault that was there.
When Adam came from the house of life,
the planets looked and saw him.
The planets looked and saw him,
who are perverse and twisted.
When the planets saw him,
Adam did not know what to say to them.
As he stands in his place, he alarmed them,
then he went past and said to them:
"O you twisted eyes,
why do you rise up against the pure?
O you evil mouth,
what would you say to the upright tongue?
O you who come to an end,
what do you wish to learn from the truthful lips?
O you deficient, cut-off ones,
what do you wish to learn from the shining form?
Not for your sake have I come here,
but God has sent me here.
Not for your sake have I come here,
you to whom no counsel was given by God.
For the sake of the Second I have come,
that his works may not perish.
His works shall not perish,
because his right hand is pure."
When they heard this from him,
they became nurturers to him.
One brought water,
another sent wind.
One sent wind
and joined together a crown for all.
Each one gave him splendour,
and they raised him with food.
He in turn enlightened them
without ceasing.
They were nurturers to him,
yet from time to time they let loose terror against him.
Then the soul prays in enlightenment,
and the terror is not let loose against him.
In praise Adam prayed to God, the Great:
"Send me this helper."
Only a short time he dwelt among them,
soon he escaped their hands.
[He escaped] the deficiency,
he ascended away from the plots.
They see his rich splendour,
how bright light surrounds him.
He ascended and beheld the pure Perfection,
which came to meet him.
He said to her:
"Come, come, gentle helper,
for your sake I dwelt in the world.
Because of your splendour and your speech
no terror was let loose against me."
She took Adam by the right hand,
ascended and set him upright in her abode,
at the place where God, the Great, is praised
and where their splendour and form are bright:
"That Adam whom you entrusted to me
is again set upright with you."
God blessed him
and spoke kindly to him:
"Blessed be you, and praised be your Creator who created you;
this one, soul, I brought to you." —
And praised be God, the Living.
