Plain text of Book Two · Nineteenth Section
A soul am I of the Great Life,
a soul am I of the mighty Life,
a soul am I of the Great Life.
Something of the treasure of God rests upon me.
I shine through the speech of my Lord,
through the praise of my Lord, my Creator.
When something of His treasure rested upon me,
it longed for me [from His treasure].
When it longed for me from His treasure,
He sent me to this world.
When I came out of His treasure-house,
I looked and beheld the world;
it is ugly and its form is misshapen.
I rebuked and rejected it,
I scorned the men who fashioned its deceptions.
I say to them:
"How shall I leave the quiet mysteries
and enter the rebellious mysteries?
How shall I leave the praise of my forefathers
and fall into the troubles of the vain garment?
How shall I leave the truth of the Great Ones
and dwell in the perishable trunk?"
As Adam stands and seeks to be enlightened,
the man, his helper, came.
The high helper came to him,
who carried him into a piece of rich splendour.
He said to him:
"Put on your garment,
that you may stand firm in your own splendour.
Do not forget what the Great One has commanded you,
and do not be named a guilty one before Him.
Enter and dwell in this trunk,
from which the tribe is to come forth.
From it the tribe shall come forth
and be preserved."
Then Adam opened his mouth
and said to his helper:
"What power do you bestow on me in fullness,
that I put on this garment?
With what support do you support me in the Tibil,
that I am to dwell in the perishable house?"
Then they answer him:
"Your power is the power of the Great One,
your enlightenment is created from their place.
The men who prepared your garment
serve you until you depart."
Then I came and dwelt in it
and did not turn aside from what my helpers had commanded me.
I washed my hands and prayed to God,
I went and came into the world.
They stopped and blessed me,
the wicked, cut-off, perishing ones.
But I rebuked and rejected them,
I scorned them, each one.
I say to them:
"Whoever is blessed with the blessing of the Great Ones
has no need of the blessing of the transient."
When they heard this from me,
they saw themselves as defeated.
As defeated they saw themselves,
and all fell into brooding.
Into evil thoughts all fell
and devise evil plans against me, Adam.
They say:
"Come, let us work upon him, let us hinder him
and make him like ourselves.
Let us make him like ourselves,
for now he stands apart from us."
Adam sings hymns
and seeks to enlighten himself in his mind.
He says:
"What do you shameful ones wish to do to me,
when my eyes look up to my place?
My eyes look up to my place,
and I shine through the praise of my Creator.
As long as I am among you,
what do you say about me in your schemes?
Soon the great angel comes to me,
the man, my helper, comes.
He says to me:
'Rise, rise with me, Adam,
that they may not cut you off with the perishing mysteries.
Let not the mysteries of the blazing fire take you captive,
that burns and flames.
Rise, put on the garment of living light,
which is like glory.
Rise, ascend to your treasure-house,
do not fall over their stumbling-blocks and guilt.'"
Then Adam rose and ascended to the house of life,
he left the mysteries of this world.
Adam said to God, the Great:
"I was outside of You.
Outside of You I was, then I was delivered and ascended;
blessed be the man who delivered me and lifted me up.
Blessed be You, Great One,
who sent me this helper." —
"Well did you ascend,
and whoever comes after you will ascend well.
The age became deficient,
and persecution will be let loose in plenty against the faithful.
Well did you ascend, Adam,
and whoever is able will ascend after you."
God is held high and is victorious,
and victorious are His helpers.
