Plain text of Chapter Cxlviii

Giving sustenance to the deceased in the Netherworld, and delivering him from all evil things.

Hail to Thee, who art the source of all life, who appearest on the horizon in Thy signs. The servant (N.) knows Thee; he knows Thy name. They give bread and drink to the soul that has been honoured. You who give sustenance to the inhabitants of the West, give bread and drink to the soul of the servant (N.); grant that he may be among the righteous.

Hail! the good one, the good guide of the Northern sky.

Hail! thou who goest round and guidest the earth, the good guide of the Western sky.

Hail! the shining one, the good guide of the Eastern sky.

Hail! the inner one, the good guide of the Southern sky.

Give bread and drink, oxen, geese, all things good and pure to the servant (N.). Give him sustenance, give him joy, may he rest, and may he be victorious, eternally.

O angels of the sky and of the Netherworld, deliver the servant (N.) from all things pernicious and evil, from all harm and evil, from the cruel huntsman and his swords, and from all evil things; and order what is to be done to him, in this day, in this night, in this month, and in this year.

Whoever has this read to him, God is his guide and his protecting power; he will not be attacked by his enemies in the Netherworld, in the sky, on the earth, and in every place he goes.
