Plain text of Chapter 10 – The Signs of God
10.1 Krishna conveyed the word of God: Hear once more, O mighty-armed, My supreme word, which I shall speak to you, who delight in it, out of desire for your good.
10.2 Neither the hosts of angels nor the great seers know My origin, for I am the Origin of the angels and of the great seers in every respect.
10.3 Whoever knows Me as the Unborn, without beginning, the Great Lord of the worlds — he, undeluded among mortals, is freed from all sins.
10.4 Understanding, knowledge, freedom from delusion, forbearance, truth, self-restraint, calm; pleasure and pain, birth and death, fear and fearlessness;
10.5 non-violence, equanimity, contentment, austerity, charity, fame and dishonour — these varied conditions of beings come from Me alone.
10.6 The seven great seers of old and the four first fathers were created by My will; from them have come all the peoples of this world.
10.7 Whoever truly knows these signs of Mine and My sovereign power is united with Me in unshaken devotion; of this there is no doubt.
10.8 I am the Origin of all; from Me everything proceeds. Knowing this, the wise worship Me, filled with devotion.
10.9 With their thoughts on Me, their lives given to Me, enlightening one another and ever speaking of Me, they are content and rejoice.
10.10 To those ever steadfast, worshipping Me with love, I give the understanding by which they come to Me.
10.11 Out of compassion for them, I, who dwell near their hearts, destroy the darkness born of ignorance with the shining lamp of knowledge.
10.12 Arjuna said: The One whom you proclaim is the Supreme Absolute, the Supreme Abode, the Supreme Purifier, the Eternal, the Divine, the First, the Unborn, the All-Pervading Lord.
10.13 So all the seers have declared Him — the divine seer Nārada, Asita, Devala and Vyāsa — and so you yourself now convey to me.
10.14 All that you tell me, O Keśava, I hold to be true. Neither the angels nor the demons know the full manifestation of the Lord.
10.15 God alone knows Himself by Himself — the Supreme Being, Creator of beings, Lord of beings, God of the angels, Master of the world.
10.16 Convey to me, O messenger, without reserve, the divine signs of God, by which He encompasses these worlds.
10.17 How shall I come to know Him, meditating on Him always? In which of His signs should I remember Him?
10.18 Tell me again in detail, O Janārdana, of His power and His signs; for I am never satisfied with hearing this nectar of His word.
10.19 Krishna conveyed the word of God: Very well, I shall declare to you My divine signs, the chief among them, O best of the Kurus; for there is no end to their full extent.
10.20 I am nearer to every being than its own heart, O Guḍākeśa. I am the First and the Last; the beginning, the middle and the end of all beings are under My command.
10.21 Among the shining ones of heaven, the brightest is My sign; among lights, the radiant sun; among the winds, Marīci; among the stars of night, the moon.
10.22 Among the scriptures, the chanted Sāma is My sign; among the angels, their chief; among the senses, the mind; among living beings, consciousness.
10.23 Among the powers of the storm, the one that brings blessing is My sign; among hidden beings, the keeper of treasure; among the elements, fire; among peaks, Meru.
10.24 Among priests, know the foremost, Bṛhaspati, as My sign, O Pārtha; among commanders, the leader of armies; among bodies of water, the ocean.
10.25 Among great seers, Bhṛgu is My sign; among words, the One Word; among acts of worship, the silent remembrance of God; among things immovable, the Himālaya.
10.26 Among all trees, the sacred fig is My sign; among the seers of heaven, Nārada; among the heavenly singers, Citraratha; among the perfected, the sage Kapila.
10.27 Among horses, know Uccaiḥśravas as My sign; among lordly elephants, Airāvata; and among men, the just king.
10.28 Among weapons, the thunderbolt is My sign; among cows, the wish-yielding cow; the power of procreation is My sign; among serpents, Vāsuki.
10.29 Among the serpent-folk, Ananta is My sign; among creatures of the deep, the ruler of the waters; among the forefathers, the most noble; among those who restrain, the angel of death.
10.30 Among the demon-born, Prahlāda the devout is My sign; among measures, time; among beasts, the lion; and among birds, the eagle.
10.31 Among purifiers, the wind is My sign; among warriors, Rāma; among fishes, the sea-monster; among rivers, the Ganges.
10.32 Of creations, I am the Beginning and the End, and all between, O Arjuna. Among sciences, the knowledge of the soul is My sign; among those who debate, sound reasoning.
10.33 Among letters, the first letter is My sign; among compounds, the joining of pairs. I alone am the Lord of endless Time; I am the Sustainer, whose sight encompasses all.
10.34 Death that seizes all is by My command, and the birth of all that is to come. Among the qualities of women, fame, grace, speech, memory, wisdom, steadfastness and forbearance are My signs.
10.35 Among chants, the great Sāma is My sign; among metres, the Gāyatrī; among months, Mārgaśīrṣa; among seasons, the flowering spring.
10.36 Even the cunning of the gambler is under My power; the splendour of the splendid is My gift; victory, resolve and the goodness of the good are My signs.
10.37 Among the Vṛṣṇis, My messenger Vāsudeva is My sign; among the Pāṇḍavas, Dhanaṃjaya; among the sages, Vyāsa; among the poets, the poet Uśanā.
10.38 Among those who chastise, the rod of justice is My sign; among those who seek victory, wise policy; among secrets, silence; and among the wise, wisdom.
10.39 Whatever is the seed of all beings, O Arjuna, that is My creation. There is nothing, moving or unmoving, that could exist without Me.
10.40 There is no end to My divine signs, O scorcher of foes; what I have declared is only a brief account of their extent.
10.41 Whatever is glorious, prosperous or mighty, know that it has sprung from a mere spark of My splendour.
10.42 But what need have you, O Arjuna, of knowing all this in detail? I uphold this entire universe by a single command of Mine.
