Plain text of Yasht 9. Gosh Yasht (Yasht on the Cattle)

May God the Wise Lord be glorified! May Satan be afflicted! . . .

Ashem Vohu: Holiness is the best of all good. . . .

I confess myself a worshipper of God, a follower of the messenger Zarathushtra, one who hates the devils and obeys the laws of God;

For devotion, prayer, thanksgiving, and glorification unto God, the holy and master of holiness.

For the powerful Drvaspa, made by God and holy, His blessing of the flocks;

Be thanksgiving, with devotion, prayer, thanksgiving, and glorification.

Yatha ahu vairyo: The will of the Lord is the law of holiness. . . .

I.

1 We give thanks to God for the powerful Drvaspa, made by God and holy, that keeps the flocks in health, the herds in health, the grown-up cattle in health, the young ones in health; that watches well from afar, with a wide-spread and long-continued welfare-giving friendship;

2 That is like a chariot with teams of horses yoked, its wheels sounding, fat and glistening, strong, tall-formed, weal-possessing, health-giving, powerful to stand and powerful to turn for assistance to the faithful.

3 For this blessing did Haoshyangha, the Paradhata, offer up a sacrifice to God on the enclosure of the Hara, the beautiful height, made by God, with a hundred male horses, a thousand oxen, and ten thousand lambs, and with an offering of libations:

4 "Grant me this boon, O good, most beneficent God, that I may overcome all the devils of Mazandaran; that I may never fear and bow through terror before the devils, but that all the devils may fear and bow in spite of themselves before me, that they may fear and flee down to darkness."

5 God granted him that boon, as he was offering libations, giving gifts, sacrificing, and entreating that He would grant him that boon.

6 For the brightness and glory of this blessing, I will offer unto God a sacrifice worth being heard; I will offer a sacrifice well performed, in thanks for the powerful Drvaspa, made by God and holy. We offer up libations to God in thanks for the powerful Drvaspa, made by God and holy; we offer the Haoma-drink and meat, the sacred twigs, the wisdom of the tongue, the holy prayers, the speech, the deeds, the libations, and the rightly-spoken words, to God alone.

Yenghe hatam: All those beings of whom God the Wise Lord knows the goodness. . . .
