Plain text of The Gatha Spenta Mainyu · Yasna 23 (The Souls of the Righteous; Prayers for Them)
1 I desire to draw near with my praise, remembering those souls of the righteous which have existed from of old, the souls of the houses, and of the villages, of the communities, and of the provinces, who by God's decree hold the heaven in its place apart, and the water, land, and cattle, and who hold the children in the wombs safely enclosed apart so that they do not miscarry.
2 And I desire to give thanks to God the Wise Lord, and with my praise for His bountiful gifts, with all the holy angels who are heavenly servants of God. And I desire to remember in my worship, with my praise, the soul of Gayomard, the first man, and that of Zarathushtra Spitama, and those of King Vishtaspa, and of Isatvastra, the Zarathushtrian, with all the holy souls of the other ancient counsellors as well. 3. And I desire in my worship to remember every righteous soul whosesoever it may be, and wheresoever dead upon this earth its possessor may have lain, the pious woman, or the girl of tender years, the maiden diligent among the cattle in the field who may have dwelt here; yea, all which are now remembered from this house, and which attain to our good prayers and our homage. 4. Yea, I desire to remember the righteous with my praise, redoubted as they are and overwhelming, those who held to the ancient lore, and the next of kin; and I desire to remember mine own soul in my worship with my praise; and I desire therewith to give thanks to God, Lord of the ritual, and with praise; and I desire to approach all His good angels with my praise, the heavenly and the earthly, who are set to serve Him, because of Righteousness the Best!
