Plain text of Book 20, Hymn 47

We pray that God show His strength, to strike the mighty tyrant dead: a vigorous Hero is He.

God is the Giver, most powerful, a friend to the grateful, bright, famed in song.

By song, as 'twere, the mighty bolt, which none may parry, was prepared: lofty, invincible is He.

The living beings of the worlds yoke the bright, the ruddy steed of the sun: the lights are shining in the sky.

They yoke on both sides to the sun's car the two tawny coursers, bold, bearers of the chief.

Thou, sun, a sign of God, making light where no light was, and form, O men, where form was not, wast born together with the dawns.

His bright rays bear the sun aloft, by the command of God who knoweth all that is, that every one may see.

The constellations pass away, like thieves, together with their beams, before the all-beholding sun.

Its herald rays are seen afar, refulgent o'er the world of men, like fiery flames that burn and blaze.

Swift and all-beautiful is the sun, a sign of God, maker of the light by God's command, illuming all the radiant realm.

It goes to the hosts of angels, it comes hither to mankind, all light for us to see.

By that light which God the All-Seeing hath given it, the sun beholds the active throughout mankind.

It pervades heaven and wide mid-air, meting the days out with its beams, seeing all things that have birth.

Seven radiant coursers, harnessed to the sun's car, bear it, the far-seeing, radiant sign of God.

The sun is borne by seven bright mares, the daughters of the car: with these, its own team, it travels.
