Plain text of Book 20, Hymn 17
In perfect unison all yearning hymns of mine that find the light of heaven have sung forth the praise of God the Mighty. As wives embrace their lord, the comely bridegroom, so they compass the Bountiful One about that He may help.
Directed unto Thee my spirit never strays, for I have set my hopes on Thee, O much-invoked! Let Thy mercy, wonderful King, rest upon this sacred gathering, and let our offering be accepted.
From indigence and hunger God the Mighty turns away: the Bountiful hath dominion over precious wealth. These Seven Rivers flowing on their downward path are signs of the might of the Mighty One.
As on the fair-leafed tree rest birds, so to God flow the gifts of the grateful that the bowls contain. Their face that glows with splendour through their mighty power hath found the shine of heaven for man, the light of the righteous.
As in the game a winner piles his winnings, so the Bountiful One, sweeping all together, brought forth the sun. This mighty deed of Thine none other could achieve, none, O Bountiful, before Thee, none in recent time.
The Bountiful One came by turns to all the tribes of men: the Mighty took notice of the people's songs of praise. The man whose offerings God accepts vanquisheth his foes by potent gifts.
As waters flow together to the river, thus gifts flow to God, as rivulets to the lake. In place of sacrifice sages exalt His might, as the rain swells the corn by moisture sent from heaven.
He rushes through the region like a furious bull, He who hath made these floods subject to the righteous. This Bountiful One hath found light for the man who brings oblation, offers the gift, and promptly pours his gifts.
Let the keen axe come forth together with the light: here be, as erst, the teeming cow of sacrifice. Let the fire, God's sign, shine pure with its refulgent ray, and let the hero's glory glow like heaven's clear sheen.
O much-invoked, may we subdue all famine and evil want with store of grain and cattle. May we, allied, as first in rank, with princes, obtain possessions by our own exertion.
May God, Lord of Prayer, protect us from the rearward, and from above, and from below, from sinners. May God the Mighty from the front, and from the centre, as friend to friends, vouchsafe us room and freedom.
Thou art Lord of wealth in earth and heaven, O God, Lord of Prayer, Mighty One. Mean though he be, give wealth to him who lauds Thee. Preserve us evermore with blessings.
