Plain text of Book 20, Hymn 12
Prayers have been offered up through love of glory: Vasishtha, honour God the Mighty in the battle. He who with might encompasses all existence hears the words which I, His faithful servant, utter.
2 A cry was raised which reached Thee, O God, a cry that Thou send us strength in combat. None among men knows his own life's duration: bear us in safety over these our troubles.
3 The booty-seeking chariot I make ready: my prayers have reached Him who accepts them gladly. God the Mighty, when He had overthrown resistless tyrants, forced with His might the two world-halves asunder.
4 Like fat cows swelled the waters: the singers sought Thy holy rite, O God. Come unto us with Thy mercy as the wind comes with its swiftness: Thou, through our solemn hymns, bestowest booty.
5 So may these gladdening offerings be accepted by Thee, O God the Mighty, very bounteous to the singer. Thou alone pitiest mortals: O Hero, be pleased with this offering.
6 Thus the Vasishthas glorify with praises God the Mighty One, whose power wields thunder. Praised, may He guard our wealth in kine and heroes. Preserve us evermore with blessings, O God.
7 Impetuous, Thunderer, strong, quelling the mighty, King, potent, overthrower of tyrants: may His mercy come hither swiftly. May our noon offering be accepted.
