Plain text of Book 19, Hymn 42
Prayer is the officiating priest, devotion is the sacrifice: with prayer are the stakes set up. From prayer was the attending priest born, from prayer the hidden offering.
2 Prayer is the fatness-dropping ladle: with prayer was the altar reared. Prayer is worship, lengthened rite, the sages who pay sacrifice, the offerers of the victim for God's sake.
3 To Him who frees from woe mine hymn I offer, to the Good Guardian, as I seek His favour. Accept this offering of mine, O God the Mighty. Fulfilled be all the sacrificer's wishes!
4 With prayer I call on Him who frees from trouble, Lord of the angels, Splendid, chief of sacrifices. Strength is mine, bestowed by God the Mighty.
