Plain text of Book 19, Hymn 34
O God, Thou art the Guardian: let Thy healing plant keep safely all our bipeds and our quadrupeds.
The harms of gambling, the plots of the fifty-threes, the hundred practisers of witchcraft, all these may God make weak, bereft of their effectual force.
Baffle the loud factitious howl, make impotent the seven decays. As when an archer speeds the shaft, drive away want, O God.
This counteracts the sorceress, this banishes malignity. Then may victorious God prolong the days we have to live.
Let God's protecting might encompass us on every side, wherewith He quells the pains of shoulder and neck, might by greater might.
Three times hast Thou engendered this plant fixed on the surface of the earth. The learned of olden time knew that its name was Guardian.
The ancient plants surpass thee not, nor any herbs of recent days. A potent remedy is this plant, a most felicitous defence, by God's gift.
Then when thou sprangest into life, thou plant of unmeasured strength, God the Mighty bestowed great power upon thee from the first.
To thee in truth, O forest tree, God the Mighty gave strength. Driving away all maladies, strike down what is harmful, O plant, by His leave.
Lumbago and rheumatic pain, consumptive cough, and pleurisy, and fever which each autumn brings, may God make powerless.
