Plain text of Book 19, Hymn 6

God's knowledge is thousandfold, His sight thousandfold, His power thousandfold. On every side He encompasses the earth, and is nearer to man than the space of his own heart.

With three parts of His dominion He is above in heaven; here is a fourth part, whence the creation spread forth on every side, to all that eats not and that eats.

So mighty is His grandeur, yea, greater than all this. All creatures are but a small part of His dominion; the greater part is in heaven, where nothing dies.

God is in truth Lord of all that hath been and all that yet shall be; Lord, too, of immortality, and of whatever groweth by His bounty.

When mankind was portioned out, in how many callings were they set? What was their mouth, what their arms? What are the names of thighs and feet?

Some were made scholars and teachers, some rulers and defenders, some farmers and traders, some labourers; different callings and duties, and the noblest before God is the most righteous.

The moon was created by God's command, and the sun was made by Him a sign. By His command the wind and the lightning serve.

Forth from His command came mid-air; the sky was fashioned by Him, the earth was spread out by Him, and the regions. Thus He formed the worlds.

From Him were horses created, from Him all creatures with two rows of teeth. From Him were created kine, from Him were goats and sheep produced.

From Him, the great Lord of all, came the sacred hymns, the songs, and the metres, and the sacred formulas.

From Him were created the creatures fleet as wind, and animals both wild and tame.
