Plain text of Book 18, Hymn 4 (continued)
Thou art the grass whereon our forefathers sat.
Loosen, O God, the bond that binds us; loosen the bond above, between, and under. Then under Thy protection, O Lord, may we be sinless and restored to freedom.
From all those bonds, O God the All-Seeing, release us, wherewith a man is bound at length and cross-wise. Then may we live a hundred autumn seasons guarded by Thee, O King, by Thee protected.
To God the Radiant, who receives the offerings made in remembrance of the departed, be praise and homage!
To God, the Provider, for the sake of the forefathers, be praise and homage!
For the forefathers, in the name of the Provider, be praise and homage!
To God, who takes the souls of our forefathers by His command through His angel of death, be praise and homage!
To thee, O great-grandfather, and those with thee, be this prayer: God have mercy upon you!
To thee, grandfather, and to those with thee, be this prayer: God have mercy upon you!
To you, O forefathers, be this prayer: God have mercy upon you!
God have mercy on the forefathers who dwelt upon earth.
God have mercy on the forefathers who dwelt in the firmament.
God have mercy on the forefathers who are now in the Garden.
God have mercy on your energy, forefathers! God have mercy on your sap!
God have mercy on your wrath, forefathers! God have mercy on your ardour!
God have mercy on what was awful, on what was terrible in you!
God have mercy, forefathers, on all that was propitious! God have mercy on all that was pleasant in you!
Homage to God for you, forefathers! Mercy be upon you, forefathers!
All forefathers who are here, the forefathers here are you: let them follow you. May ye be the most excellent of these.
All living fathers who are here are we here: let them follow us. May we be the most excellent of these.
Bright Light of God, we will kindle thee, rich in thy splendour, fading not, so that this glorious fuel may send forth to heaven its light. Bring food to those who sing His praise.
Within the waters runs the Moon, the strong-winged Eagle soars in heaven. Ye lightnings with your golden wheels, men find not your abiding-place. Hear this my call, O Heaven and Earth.
