Plain text of Book 18, Hymn 2

For God the provision flows clear; to God is offering paid; to God is sacrifice prepared and carried forth with the light of devotion.

Offer to God sacrifice most sweet in savour and draw near. Bow down before the sages of the olden time, the ancient ones who made the path.

Offer to God the King butter and milk in sacrifice. So may He grant that we may live long days of life amid living men.

For some the clear provision runs, some sit by sacrificial oil. To those for whom the honey flows forth, even to those, the blessed, let him depart.

Let him go to those sages austere, born of devotion, the first followers of the Law, the sons of the Law, upholders of the Law.

Invincible through devotion, they who by their devotion went to heaven, who practised great austerity: even to those let him depart.

The heroes who contend in war and boldly cast their lives away, or who give gifts a thousandfold: even to those let him depart.

Let him go to those sages austere, born of devotion, skilled in a thousand ways and means, the sages who protect the light of day.

Be pleasant unto him, O earth, thornless and lulling him to rest. Vouchsafe him shelter broad and sure.

In the free amplitude of earth take roomy space to lodge you in. Let all offerings which in life you paid drop honey on you now.

I have recalled your life to life, to being, power, and energy. Let your soul go to its own; so to the righteous hasten.

Let not your soul be left behind: here let not aught of you remain, of spirit, body, members, sap.

Let not a tree oppress you, nor the great earth weigh you down. Among the righteous find your home, and thrive among those whom God has favoured.

Each parted member, severed from your body, your vital breaths that in the wind have vanished: with all of these, piece after piece, shall God who has power over all things reunite you.

Bringing delight, prolonging our existence, here let our righteous forebears' example be with us; coming with sacrifice may we assist the departed by charity and prayer, living long lives through many autumn seasons.

Now by this cow I bring charity for your sake, by the boiled rice set in milk for you. Be the supporter of the folk left here without a livelihood.

God is higher, and nothing whatever do I see above Him. This sacrifice of mine is for God alone. He spread the atmosphere about us.

I give this place to him who has come hither and now is mine, to be a home to rest in. This is God's decree: This man is Mine; let him come here to riches.

This date we settle once for all, that it may never be fixed again: a hundred autumns, not before.

This date we order, and so on.

This date we limit, and so on.

This date we measure, and so on.

This date we mete out, and so on.

This date we establish, and so on.

This date we mete and measure out, that it may never be fixed again: a hundred autumns, not before.

The period I have measured, come to heaven; I would my life were long, not to be measured out again: a hundred autumns, not before.

Inbreath and outbreath, breath diffused, life, sight to look upon the sun: seek by a straight unwinding path the righteous who have gone before.

Unmarried men who toiled and have departed, the childless, having left their foes behind them, have found on high the world whereto they mounted, reflecting on the ridge of vaulted heaven.

The lowest is the watery heaven, the blossoming heaven the middlemost; the third and highest, wherein the righteous dwell, is called the heaven of heavens.

The fathers of our father, his grandfathers, those who have entered into air's wide region, those who inhabit earth or dwell in heaven: these forefathers will we remember with charity and prayer.

You see now, and never again shall look upon, the sun in heaven. Cover him as a mother draws her skirt about her son, O earth!

This once, and at no other time hereafter in a lengthened life: cover him, as a wife, O earth, covers her husband with her robe!

Round you auspiciously I wrap the vesture of our mother earth. Be bliss among the living mine, charity among the departed yours!

You have prepared, pathmakers, a fair world for the righteous to be their treasure. Go to that world, and may God send us the Nourisher hither to bear us on the right paths.

Guard of the world, whose cattle are never injured, may He bear you hence, for He has knowledge. May He consign you to the keeping of the righteous, and to the gracious may God give you.

Lord of all life, let Him guard you, convey you forward on the distant pathway. May God the Life-giver conduct you thither where dwell the pious who have gone before you.

This is the robe that first was wrapped about you: cast off the robe you wore here among us. Go, knowing, to the reward of virtuous action, your many gifts bestowed upon the friendless.

From his dead hand I take the staff he carried, together with his lore and strength and splendour. There are you, there; and here with good men round us may we overcome all enemies and foemen.

From his dead hand I take the bow he carried, together with his power and strength and splendour. Having collected wealth and ample treasure, come hither to the world of living beings.
