Plain text of Book 18, Hymn 1

Three hymns the sages have disposed in order, the many-formed, the fair, the all-beholding. These in one single world are placed and settled: the growing plants, the breezes, and the waters.

The Mighty has yielded for the Mighty the milk of heaven: inviolable is the Boundless One's child. According to His wisdom the All-Seeing knows all; He hallows, the Holy, times for sacrifice.

May no temptation of the roaring river haunt my heart or leave it troubled. May God accomplish all that we desire, and may our eldest Brother tell us this as chief.

Yea, even this blessed morning, rich in store of food, splendid, with heavenly lustre, has shone out for man, since they, as was the wish of yearning angels, brought forth that yearning light for the assembly as the guide.

And the fleet falcon brought for sacrifice from afar this flowing drop most excellent and passing wise, when the tribes chose as invoking guide the wonder-worker, and the hymn rose up.

Be You kind to him who feeds You as with grass, and skilled in sacrifice offers holy gifts, when You, having received the sage's strengthening food with lauds, after long toil come with many more.

Urge Your parents, as a lover, to delight: the lovely One desires and craves it from His heart. As priest He calls aloud, as warrior shows His skill, as ruler tries His strength, and with the hymn is stirred.

Far famed is he, the mortal man, O Light, You son of strength, who has obtained Your favour. He, gathering power, borne onward by his horses, makes his days lovely in his might and splendour.

Hear us, O Radiant One, in the great assembly; harness Your rapid car, the car of life. Bring heaven and earth, the parents of creatures, hither. Stay with us here, nor from the righteous be absent.

When, holy Light, the divine assembly, the holy synod amid the angels, is gathered, and when You, divine, deal forth treasures, vouchsafe us too our portion of the riches.

The Radiant One has looked upon the van of mornings, and on the days, the earliest Knower of all that is born. After the dawns, after their rays of brightness, the sun has entered into earth and heaven.

The Radiant One has looked against the van of mornings, against the days, the earliest Knower of all that is born; in many a place against the beams of the sun, against the heavens and earth has He extended.

Heaven and earth, first by everlasting Order, speakers of truth, are near enough to hear us, when the Lord, urging men to worship, sits as priest, assuming all His vital vigour.

As Lord over all by eternal Law, bear, as the chief who knows, our offering, smoke-bannered with the fuel, radiant, joyous, better to praise and worship, priest for ever.

I praise your work that you may make me prosper: hear, heaven and earth, twain worlds that drop with fatness! While days and nights go to the world of spirits, let the parents with sweet mead refresh us.

When the cow's nectar wins the God completely, men here below are heaven's and earth's sustainers. All the righteous come to this Your heavenly prayer which from the motley pair milked oil and water.

Has the King seized us? How have we offended against His holy ordinance? Who knows? For even the Friend among the angels is angry. There are both song and wealth for those who come not.

It is hard to understand the nature of the Enduring One, where she who is akin becomes a stranger. Guard ceaselessly, great Lord, him who ponders the name of death, easy to be comprehended.

They in the synod where the angels rejoice, where they are seated in the dwelling of the sun, have given the moon his beams, the sun his splendour: the two unweariedly maintain their brightness.

The counsel which the angels meet to consider, their secret plan, of that we have no knowledge. There let God the Light-giver, the Boundless, and the Friend, know that we are sinless before the All-Seeing.

Companions, let us learn a prayer to the Mighty One whom the thunder arms, to glorify your bold and most heroic Friend.

For You by slaying the obstructor are the destroyer of obstruction, famed for might. You, Hero, in rich gifts surpass wealthy chiefs.

O'er the broad land You go like a gleam; here on vast earth let breezes blow upon us. Here has our dear Friend, the All-Seeing, united, like fire in the wood, shot forth His splendour.

Sing praise to Him the chariot-borne, the famous, Sovereign of men, the dread and strong destroyer. O Healer, praised, be gracious to the singer; let Your darts spare us and smite down another.

The pious call upon God, the Giver of knowledge; they worship Him while sacrifice proceeds. The virtuous call upon God to hear them; God send bliss to him who gives!

God, the Giver of knowledge, is called on by the righteous who come right forward to our solemn worship. Seated upon this sacred grass, rejoice. Give us strengthening food that brings no sickness.

O God, who comes with the righteous, joying in hymns and offerings, give plenteous wealth to this giver of charity, a portion, worth a thousand, of refreshment.

May they ascend, the lowest, highest, midmost, the righteous forefathers who deserve a share of mercy. May they who have attained to life, the righteous and gentle, aid us by their example when we remember them.

I have attained the gracious-minded forefathers' example; I have gained son and progeny from God the All-Pervading. They who enjoyed pressed juices with offering, seated on sacred grass, come oftenest to our remembrance.

Now be this homage of prayer offered for the forefathers, for those who passed of old and those who followed, those who have rested in the earthly region, and those who dwell among the happy races.

The prosperity of the righteous is there with the pious, the judgement is there with the sages, the Lord of Prayer is with the singers. Exalters of God, by God exalted, may those righteous forefathers aid us in our invocations!

Yea, this is good to taste and full of sweetness, verily it is strong and rich in flavour. No one may conquer the Mighty One in the battle when He has accepted the offering we make.

Honour the King with your offerings, God, who gathers men together, even Him who travelled over the mighty rivers, who searches out and shows the path to many.

God first found for us the road to travel; this pasture never can be taken from us. Men born on earth tread their own paths that lead them whither our ancient forefathers have departed.

Righteous forefathers who sat on sacred grass, may God help us: these offerings have we made for your sake in charity. So may He come to us with most auspicious favour, bestow on us unfailing health and plenty.

Bowing their bended knees and seated southward let all accept this sacrifice with favour. Punish us not for any sin, O Lord, which we through human frailty have committed.

Go forth, go forth upon the homeward pathways whither our righteous forefathers have gone before us. Then shall you look on the blessings of the Garden, where the All-Seeing Lord and the Judge receive the righteous.

Go hence, depart, you evil ones, fly in all directions. This world God has provided for the righteous. May God bestow upon this man a dwelling adorned with days and beams of light and waters.

We set you down with yearning, and with yearning we kindle the fire; with yearning, we give yearning forefathers' due, the food of charity in their memory.

We, splendid men, deposit you; we, splendid men, kindle the fire; splendid, we give the splendid forefathers' due, the food of charity in their memory.

Our forefathers were righteous sages, the pious ones, who deserved mercy. May God look on us with favour; may we enjoy their gracious loving-kindness.

He has gone hence and risen on high, mounting heaven's ridges by that path whereon the righteous sages, the conquerors of earth, went up.
