Plain text of Book 15, Hymn 2
He arose and went his way to the eastern region. The great hymns and all the angels followed him. That man is alienated from the great hymns and from all the angels who reviles the devotee who possesses this knowledge. He who has this knowledge becomes the beloved home of the great hymns and of all the angels. In the eastern region faith is his companion, the hymn his panegyrist, knowledge his vesture, day his turban, night his hair, the splendour of the stars his jewel, past and future are his running footmen, mind is his war-chariot, and the winds draw it; the breeze is his charioteer, the storm his goad, fame and glory are his harbingers. Fame and glory come to him who has this knowledge.
He arose and went away to the southern region. Sacrifice and the sacrificer and the sacrificial offerings followed him. The man who reviles the devotee possessing this knowledge is alienated from sacrifice, the sacrificer and the offerings. He who has this knowledge becomes the beloved home of sacrifice, the sacrificer and the offerings. In the southern region the dawn is his companion, the friend his panegyrist, knowledge his vesture, day his turban, night his hair; new moon night and full moon night are his running attendants; mind, and so on, as in stanza 1.
He arose and went away to the western region. The great hymns of the west, the waters, and the All-Seeing Sovereign followed him. He who reviles the devotee possessing this knowledge is alienated from these, the waters and the Sovereign. He who possesses this knowledge becomes the dear home of these, the waters and the Sovereign. In the western region enjoyment is his companion, laughter his panegyrist, knowledge, and so on, as above; day and night are his running attendants; mind, and so on, as above.
He arose and went away to the northern region. The hymns of earth and heaven, the seven sages, and the Giver of provision followed him. He who reviles the devotee possessing this knowledge is alienated from these. He who has this knowledge becomes the dear home of these. In the northern region lightning is his companion, thunder his panegyrist, and so on, as above; revelation and tradition are his running attendants; mind, and so on, as above.
