Plain text of Book 13, Hymn 2
Radiant, refulgent in the sky are reared the banners of His light, the Boundless One's, who beholds man, mighty in act and bountiful.
Let us laud Him, the Herdsman of the whole world, who with His rays illumines all the regions, the Mark of the quarters, brightening them with lustre, swift, mighty-pinioned, flying in the ocean.
From west to east You speed freely, making by Your power day and night of diverse colours. This is Your transcendent glory, that You alone are the source of all creation.
Victorious, inspired, and brightly shining, carried by seven strong tawny-coloured coursers, whom Atri lifted from the flood to heaven: thus men behold Your sign as its course it runs.
Let them not snare You speeding on Your journey: pass safely, swiftly, places hard to traverse, while measuring out the day and night You move, even heaven and earth.
Hail to Your rapid car, wherein the sun circles in a moment both the limits, whirled by Your bay steeds, best of all at drawing, Your hundred horses or seven goodly coursers.
Mount Your strong car, O sun, lightly rolling, drawn by good steeds, propitious, brightly gleaming, whirled by Your bays, most excellent at drawing, Your hundred horses or seven goodly coursers.
The sun has harnessed to its car to draw it seven stately bay steeds gay with golden housings. The Bright One started from the distant region; dispelling gloom it has climbed the heavens.
With lofty banner it has gone upward, and introduced the light, expelling darkness. It has looked round on all the worlds, the hero, the celestial eagle.
Rising, You spread out Your rays, You nourish all shapes and forms. With Your power You illumine both the oceans, encompassing all spheres with Your refulgence.
Moving by Your power to east and westward, these two young creatures, sporting, circle the ocean. One of the pair beholds all living creatures; with wheels of gold the bay steeds bear the other.
Atri established You in heaven to create the month. So on You go, firmly held, heating, beholding all that is.
As the calf both his parents, so You join both the distant bounds. Surely the angels up yonder knew this sacred mystery long ago.
The sun is eager to obtain all wealth that lies along the sea; great is the course spread out for it, its eastward and its westward path.
It finishes its race with speed and never turns its thought aside. Thereby it keeps not from the angels enjoyment of the drink of life.
His heralds bear Him up aloft, the sign that knows all that lives, the sun, that all may look on it.
The constellations pass away, like thieves, departing in the night, before the all-beholding sun.
His herald rays are seen afar, refulgent over the world of men, like flames of fire that burn and blaze.
Swift and all-beautiful are You, maker of the light, illuming all the radiant realm.
You go to the hosts of angels, You come hither to mankind, hither, all light to behold.
With that same eye of Yours wherewith You see, brilliant All-Seeing One, the active one among mankind,
Traversing sky and wide mid-air, You mete with Your beams our days, seeing all things that have life.
Seven bay steeds harnessed to Your car bear You, O far-seeing One, with radiant hair.
The sun has yoked the pure bright seven, the daughters of the car; with these, His own dear team, He travels.
Devout, aflame with fervent heat, the Ascendant has gone up to heaven. He returns to His birthplace, and has become the imperial ruler of the angels.
Dear unto all men, facing all directions, with hands and palms on every side extended, He, the sole God, engendering earth and heaven, bears them with His wings and arms together.
The single-footed has outstepped the biped, the biped overtakes the triple-footed; the biped has outstridden the six-footed: these sit around the body of the single-footed.
When, unwearied, fain to go, He has mounted His bays, He makes two colours, brightly shining. Rising with banners, conquering the regions, You send light through all the floods.
Verily, You are great; truly, You are great. Great is Your grandeur, Mighty One; You are great.
In heaven, O Bird, and in mid-air You shine; You shine on the earth and in the waters. You have pervaded both the seas with splendour: God, light-winner, mighty.
Soaring in mid-course hither from the distance, fleet and inspired, the bird that flies above us, with might advancing, pervading, it conquers all that moves with radiant banner.
Brilliant, observant, mighty Lord, an eagle illuming both the spheres and air between them, day and the night, clad in the robes of light, spread forth more widely all His hero powers.
Flaming and radiant, strengthening its body, bestowing floods that promptly come to meet us, luminous, winged, mighty, strength-bestower, it has mounted all the regions as He forms them.
Bright presence of the angels, the luminous herald, the sun has mounted the celestial regions. Day's maker, it has shone away the darkness, and radiant, passed over places hard to traverse.
It has gone up on high, the bright sign, the eye of the Friend, the All-Seeing and the Radiant. The sun has filled the earth and air and heaven, by the command of the One who rules all that moves and does not move.
High in the midst of heaven may we behold You whom men call the Life-giver, the bright red eagle, soaring and speeding on Your way, refulgent, unwasting light, which Atri once discovered.
Him, the eagle hasting along heaven's height, I supplicate in terror. As such prolong our lengthened life, O God: may we, unharmed, enjoy Your gracious favour.
This golden-hued swan's wings, soaring to heaven, spread over a thousand days' continued journey. Supporting all the angels upon its bosom, it goes its way beholding every creature.
The Ascendant, in primeval days the Creator, was, after, Time. Mouth of all sacrifices, He brought celestial light.
He, the Ascendant, brought the world to be; the Ascendant gave the heaven its heat. The Ascendant with His beams of light travelled along the earth and sea.
To all the regions the Ascendant came, the imperial Lord of heaven. He watches over ocean, heaven, and earth and all existing things.
Mounting the lofty ones, He, bright, unwearied, splendidly shining, makes two separate colours, while through all worlds that are He sends His lustre, radiant, observant, mighty.
One form comes on, the other is reverted: to day and night the Strong One shapes and fits them. With humble prayer for aid we call on God, who knows the way, whose home is in the region.
The suppliant's way, filling the earth, the Mighty circles the world with an eye that none deceives. May He, all-seeing, well-disposed and holy, give ear and listen to the word I utter.
Blazing with light His majesty has compassed ocean and earth and heaven and air's mid-region. May He, all-seeing, well-disposed and holy, give ear and listen to the word I utter.
The fire is wakened by the people's fuel to meet the dawn that comes like a milch-cow; like young trees shooting up on high their branches, its flames are mounting to the vault of heaven.
