Plain text of Book 13, Hymn 1

Rise, O Mighty One, who lay in the waters, and enter this fair and glorious dominion. Let God the Ascendant (Rohita), who made this All, uphold you, carefully nurtured for supreme dominion.

The strength that was in the waters has ascended; mount over the tribes which You have generated. Creating the provision of the plants, the waters and the cattle, bring hither both quadrupeds and bipeds.

O mighty and strong angels, servants of God, with the Mighty One as our helper crush down our foes. Let the Ascendant hear you, bounteous givers, you hosts who delight in sweetness.

Up to the lap of births, to lofty places, the Ascendant, the germ of the dawns, has ascended. Joined with these he found the six realms; seeing his way in front, here he received the kingship.

For you the Ascendant has obtained dominion, scattered your enemies, and become your safeguard. So by the potent hymns let heaven and earth be milked to yield you all your wishes.

The Ascendant gave the earth and the heavens their being. There the Supreme Lord held the cord extended. Thereon rests the Unborn, the Eternal One; by His might He has established earth and heaven.

The Ascendant firmly established earth and heaven; by Him the ether was fixed, by Him the firmament. He measured out the mid-air and all the regions; by Him the angels found life that lasts for ever.

Arranging the shoots and springs, the Ascendant considered this universe in all its forms and phases. May He, gone up to heaven with mighty glory, anoint your sovereignty with milk and fatness.

Your risings up, your mountings and ascensions, with which you fill heaven and the mid-region of the air: by prayer for these, by the milk of these, increasing, keep watch among His people in the kingdom of the Ascendant.

The tribes that Your heat produced have followed hither, the Calf and the strain that lauds Him. With friendly hearts let them approach to serve You, and let the young one come with his mother.

Erected, the Ascendant has reached the firmament, wise and young, creating every form and figure. The Radiant One, with heightened lustre, in the third realm has brought us joy and gladness.

Thousand-horned Bull, may He who knows all that is born, worshipped with butter, rich in heroes, being besought, never quit me; may I never forsake You. Give me abundant men and herds of cattle.

The Ascendant is the sire and the lord of worship: to Him with voice, ear and heart I offer devotion. To the Ascendant the angels come with joyful spirit. May He, by His risings, raise me until I join Him.

The Ascendant ordained sacrifice for the Maker of All; thence have I obtained this strength and energy. May I proclaim You as my Lord over the greatness of the world.

On You have mounted the great metres, with great splendour, O Knower of all that is born. The cry of devotion with the voice uplifted has mounted on You.

He goes into the womb of the earth, he robes himself in heaven and air; on the station of the Bright One he has reached the heavenly light and all the worlds.

To us, O Lord of Speech, may the earth be pleasant, pleasant our dwelling, pleasant our couches. Even here may the breath of life be our friend. May the Radiant One, O Supreme Lord, give you life and splendour.

And may our own five seasons, belonging to their Creator, the Maker of All, be gentle to us. Even here may the breath of life be our friend. Supreme Lord, may the Ascendant vouchsafe life and splendour.

Breed, O Lord of Speech, joy and understanding, kine in our stall and children in our homes. Even here may the breath of life be our friend. May the Radiant One, O Supreme Lord, give you life and splendour.

With splendour let God the Life-giving, the Radiant One, with splendour the Friend and the All-Seeing, invest you. Treading down all malignities, come hither. Pleasant and glorious have You made this kingdom.

Ascendant, borne on a speckled car, pouring water, You go on in triumph.

Golden, refulgent, lofty is the dawn, the red one, the Ascendant's sign of devotion. Through her may we win various spoil and booty; through her may we be conquerors in every battle.

The seat of the Ascendant is the dawn before us: that is the path the speckled mare pursues. Angels lead her upward, and heavenly sages ever watch and guard her.

The bay steeds of the sun, refulgent and enduring, draw the light-rolling chariot on for ever. The Ascendant, resplendent, drinker of fatness, has entered into the various-coloured heaven.

The Ascendant, Bull whose horns are sharply pointed, superior to the fire and to the sun: He who supports the sundered earth and heaven; from Him the angels carry out their tasks.

The Ascendant rose to heaven from the mighty ocean; the Ascendant rose and climbed all steeps and rises.

Prepare the Milky One who teems with fatness; she is the never-reluctant milch-cow of the angels. O Mighty One, ours be peace and safety. Let the Radiant One lead the praise and chase our foemen.

Both kindling and inflamed, adored with butter and enhanced thereby, may the conquering Light, conqueror of all, destroy my enemies.

Let Him smite down in death and burn the foeman who attacks me. Our adversaries we overcome through the Light that consumes.

Beat them down, O Mighty One, with Your bolt; beat them down, mighty with Your arm. Through the energy and force of the Radiant One I have secured my foes.

Cast down our foes beneath our feet, O Radiant One. O Lord of Prayer, oppress our rebel kinsman. Low let them fall, O Mighty One, O Radiant One, O Friend and All-Seeing, powerless to show their anger.

Ascending on high, O Light-giver, drive my foes away. Yea, beat them backward with the stone; to deepest darkness let them go.

Calf of the Sovereign One, Bull of prayers and worship, white-backed, he has gone up to the mid-region of the air. Singing, they hymn the Calf with gifts of butter; Him who is the Supreme they exalt with prayer.

Rise up to earth, rise up to heaven above it; rise up to opulence, rise up to kingship. Rise up to offspring, rise to life immortal; rise, and with the Ascendant unite your body.

With all the angels who circle round the sun, upholding royal sway, with all of these may the Ascendant, accordant, give sovereignty to you with friendly spirit.

Cleansed by prayer, sacrifices bear you upward; bay coursers, ever travelling, convey you. Your light shines over sea and billowy ocean.

The Ascendant, conqueror of cows and riches and gathered spoil, is the upholder of heaven and earth. Over the greatness of the earth would I tell my kinship with You, who have a thousand births and seven.

A glorious sight to beasts and men, You go glorious to the regions and mid-regions, on the earth, on the bosom of the boundless, bright with glory. Fain would I equal the Life-giver in beauty.

You, yonder, know all things here, when here You know what is there. From here men see the sphere of light, the sun profoundly wise in heaven.

Men kindle common fire; Him only the higher sages know.

Beneath the upper realm, above this lower, bearing her calf at foot, the cow has risen. Whitherward, to what place has she departed? Where does she calve? Not in this herd of cattle.

She has become one-footed, or two-footed, four-footed, or eight-footed or nine-footed. Of this universe the thousand-syllabled utterance: oceans flow forth from her in all directions.

Rising to heaven, enduring, hear my calling. Cleansed by prayer, sacrifices bear you upward; bay coursers, ever on the road, convey you.

This I know of You, thy progress to the sky, Your dwelling-place in loftiest heaven.

Beyond the sky, beyond the earth looks the sun, and beyond the floods; the single eye of all that is, to mighty heaven it has arisen.

The earth was made His altar, and the wide expanses were the fence. There the Ascendant established both these fires, fervent heat and cold.

He established heat and cold, He made the mountains sacrificial posts. Then both the fires, His who found celestial light, with rain for molten butter, were offered in sacrifice.

The fire of the Ascendant, His who found heaven's light, is kindled with the prayer. From Him the heat, from Him the cold, from Him the sacrifice was born.

Both fires, His who found the light of heaven, made strong by prayer, waxing by prayer, adored with prayer, by prayer enkindled, were offered in sacrifice.

One is deposited in Truth, one kindled in the waters: both fires of the Ascendant who found the light are set aflame with prayer.

That one decked by the wind, and that one prepared by the Mighty One, Lord of Prayer: fires of the Ascendant who found light, prayer-enkindled, were offered in sacrifice.

The Ascendant made the earth His altar, heaven His gift. Then heat He took for fire, and with rain for molten butter He created every living thing.

The earth became an altar, heat was the fire, and the butter rain. There by song and hymn He made these mountains rise and stand erect.

Then, having made the hills stand up, the Ascendant spoke to the earth and said: In you let everything be born, what is and what is yet to be.

This sacrifice, the first of all, the past, the present, had its birth. From that arose this universe, yea, all this world of brightness, brought by the Ascendant, the heavenly Sage.

Whoever he be, O Light-giver, who comes between You and me today, from him may God wipe away ill-dream, and troubles, and impurity.

Let us not, O Mighty One, leave the path, the sacrifice of him who presses the offering. Let not malignities dwell with us.

May we obtain, completely wrought, the thread spun out to reach the heavens, that perfects our sacrifice.
