Plain text of Book 9, Hymn 7

A hymn comparing the Bull and the Cow to the creation, a parable of God's bounty.

The high places and the highest sky are the two horns, might is the head, fire the forehead, the hour of death the joint of the neck.

The moon is the brain, the sky is the upper jaw, the earth is the lower jaw.

Lightning is the tongue, the storm-winds are the teeth, the star Revati is the neck, the Pleiades are the shoulders, the heat is the shoulder-bar.

His universe is the wind, the heaven is his world.

The soaring flight is the breast, the hollow is the region of the belly, the high summit is the hump, the vault is the breast-bone and cartilages of the ribs.

The ribs are the bars of the frame, the lesser ribs their attendants.

Day and night are the shoulder-blades, craft and friendship the fore-arms, strength is the arms.

The hind parts are the haunches, the wind is the tail, the breeze is the hair.

Scholarly rank and princely power are the hips, and strength is the thigh.

The knee-bones are two supports, the legs are for the walking, the bits of the feet are the fragrant paths, the hooves are the boundless ground.

Thought is the heart, intelligence is the liver, law the pericardium.

Hunger is the belly, refreshing drink is the rectum, mountains are the inward parts.

Wrath is the kidneys, anger the testes, offspring the generative organ.

The river is the womb, the rain-clouds are the breasts, the thunder is the udder.

The vastness of heaven is the hide, the herbs are her hair, and the stars her form.

The hosts of angels are her entrails, men are her bowels, and demons her abdomen.

Evil spirits are the blood, the hidden folk are the contents of the stomach.

The rain-cloud is her fat, her resting-place her marrow.

This verily is omniform, wearing all forms, bovine-formed.

Upon him wait omniform beasts, wearing every shape, each one who hath this knowledge.
