Plain text of Book 5, Hymn 31

The spell that they have cast for thee on unbaked dish or mingled meal, the evil wrought on undressed meat, may God turn back upon them.

The spell that they have cast for thee on jungle-cock, goat, horned ram, the evil wrought upon thy ewe, may God turn back upon them.

The spell that they have cast upon thy beast that has uncloven hooves, the ass with teeth in both his jaws, may God turn back upon them.

The secret spell upon thy plants, the evil that they have cast upon thy field, may God turn back upon them.

The spell that wicked men have cast on thine household hearth, and on thy hall of worship, may God turn back upon them.

The spell that they have cast upon thy public room, thy gambling-board, the spell they have cast upon thy dice, may God turn back upon them.

The spell that they have cast upon thine army or thy shafts and arms, the spell upon the drum, may God turn back upon them.

The charm they have laid within thy well or buried in the burning-ground, the charm they have laid within thy home, may God turn back upon them.

The spell that they have wrought for thee in flickering fire of human bones, consuming, cannibal, may God turn back upon them.

He brought this by no proper path; by the right path we drive it back. The fool in folly brought it to those who keep to established bounds.

No power had he who wrought the spell: he hurt his foot, he broke his toe. Unlucky for his wealthy lords, he has wrought happiness for us.

May God the Mighty slay with his mighty bolt, may God the Radiant pierce with his missile the sorcerer who brings the curse, who deals with roots and secret spells.
