Plain text of Book 4, Hymn 39

1 To God, Lord of the earth, I have bowed in homage. May He bless me.

As I have bowed me down to God on the earth, so may His favouring graces be mine.

2 Earth is a cow, her calf the fire, God's sign. May she, by God's leave, with her calf yield me food, strength, all my wish, life first of all; and offspring, plenty, wealth. Praise be to God!

3 To God, Lord of the air, I have bowed in homage. May He bless me.

As I have bowed me down to God in the air, so may His favouring graces be mine.

4 Air is a cow, her calf the wind, God's sign. May she, by God's leave, with her calf yield me food, strength, all my wish, life first of all; and offspring, plenty, wealth. Praise be to God!

5 To God, Lord of heaven, I have bowed in homage. May He bless me.

As I have bowed me down to God in heaven, so may His favouring graces be mine.

6 Heaven is a cow, her calf the sun, God's sign. May she, by God's leave, yield with her calf food, strength, and all my wish, life first of all, and offspring, plenty, wealth. Praise be to God!

7 To God, Lord of the quarters, have I bowed in homage. May He bless me.

As to God in the quarters I have bent, so may His favouring graces be mine.

8 The quarters are the cows, their calf the moon, God's sign. May they yield with their calf food, strength, and all my wish, life first of all, and offspring, plenty, wealth. Praise be to God!

9 The fire moves, a sign of God, which guards from imprecations.

I offer unto Thee with reverent worship. Let me not mar the service Thou hast appointed.

10 Skilled in all ways, O God, All-Knowing, I offer what is cleansed by heart and spirit.

Do Thou accept with pleasure my offering.
